How to start making NFT art

First, you need to decide on the medium for your NFT art. We recommend starting out by either making one-of-ones or layer based generative art since it is less technically difficult and Metacommerce Studio has all the tools you need to make it easy.

Decide on a concept

This is often the hardest part, but it helps to think about the kind of art you want to make first. Here is our quick and dirty list of different concepts behind NFT art:

Self-expression

You are an artist and you have things to express and communicate through art. Now, we can’t give you a guide for how to express yourself through art; it’s something that no-one has an easy answer to.In our opinion, the best thing to do is put pen to paper, or stylus to tablet, or mouse to screen, and start creating. See where it takes you!

You have a message to spread

Many NFT communities are centred around spreading a message, raising awareness or bringing together people with shared interests and beliefs. Ownership of the NFT acts like a membership card, or badge, that communicates what you care about.

If you are creating NFT art with this purpose in mind, think deeply about the attributes of the community you want to represent, or the features of the message you want to spread, and let these guide the creation of your art.

NFT worlds

Many NFT projects are totally off-the-wall. They exist in a parallel metaverse, where your NFT acts as a character in a world with its own peculiarities - language, humour, traditions, taste in music, interests and styles of dressing are all things that can contribute to community identities.

When making this kind of art, think deeply about the world you are building, and build avatars that reflect the world you are creating.

NFTs for impact

Some NFT collections have a goal to fund real world ventures and transformation. The goal of these collections is to raise money for a cause they care about. If this is the case, think about how your artwork can best represent the cause you are raising funds for. For example, if you are raising money for a whale and dolphin project, maybe you should use those marine mammals as inspiration.

Decide on a format for your artwork

Are you going to be taking photos? Making real life art that you are going to digitise? Or making digital art from the outset?

Make this decision based on:

  • What skills you already have (e.g. are you a photographer, a painter, a graphic designer, a writer)
  • What medium best represents your ideas and messages
  • What tools you have available to you
